For a clutter free home this New Year storage is a must, but sometimes hiding belongings in cupboards and in drawers causes more problems than good. Every home requires products at hand or on display, such as bathroom toiletries, utility room equipment, even just everyday favourites such as books, items maybe forgotten once stored away so this is where shelving comes in. We're here with some storage ideas to help you with that.

Shelves are versatile and adaptable to surroundings; they can be used for a purely aesthetic purpose or as a practical storage option. When it comes to including shelving in your home there are a few things to think about:

Think about the purpose of the shelf; is it for domestic use or ornamental?
What size is the area you will be placing the shelf in?
Will you want the shelf to match your interior?

Shelving can be used as a statement feature for an accent wall in a lounge or displaying your fine china or utensils in the kitchen. Opt for shelving in the bathroom to display toiletries.

How to create a statement wall using shelves…

If you’re creating a feature wall behind your bed, dining table, desk or settee it’s best to line up the main shelf against the furniture to create an even symmetrical feel. You can add smaller shelves above if you wish.

Pull together a collection of photo-frames and artwork with similar colour tones and prints. To break up the monotony add tea lights, ornaments or small plant pots were necessary. If you’re opting for a layered shelf effect then its best to place larger photo frames on the lowest shelf and smaller items on the top shelf to prevent the feature looking top heavy.

Practical Shelving Ideas

You might not realise it but most activities in the home take place in the kitchen and bathroom. Products and utensils need to be on hand and reachable but also in keeping with décor and colour scheme for a neat look. For kitchens think about placement, shelving is best at eye level and next to the cooking area to display cookery books, herbs and spices, condiments and utensils. Place above the drinks station and house your favourite mugs and crockery, create a feature by choosing complimentary coloured mugs and plates and add items such as plants and flowers for an eclectic touch, add a bowl of your favourite fruit for a natural vibe.

Bathroom Shelving is all about practicality, for ease it’s best to have products on display as oppose to hidden in a cabinet. Whilst it’s great to hide clutter and keep areas looking neat and clean, some products need to be on display. Install near the sink or along the bottom of a mirror.
