Litecraft City Guide : Manchester – The Whiskey Jar

At the eastern tip of Manchester’s industrial yet trendy Northern Quarter in what was once the heart of the textile industry you’ll find The Whiskey Jar. Opening in the Christmas of 2012, the bar sits at the corner of Tariff and Hilton Street between old textile factories and warehouses, most of which have been converted into neighbouring bars and restaurants.

Spread over two floors of a grade 2 listed textile mill; the bar has been a success with its large collection of whiskies imported from as far away as Japan. Delicious cocktails and hearty food including rustic pies made by the award-winning Great North Pie Company and a selection of flavoured scotch eggs from chicken tikka to vegetarian options such as sweet potato and feta complete the menu.

Aside from the delicious food and impressive whiskey collection, the bar boasts a décor that befits the roots of the Northern Quarter; particularly chronicling the industrial revolution. The mill has been stripped back to its former state exposing original red brick walls, gloss painted beams and  pillars. A maze of original pipe-work adorn the ceilings, once forgotten floor boards have been buffed and restored to their original glory and stunning features such as the original fireplace have been revealed giving a warm welcome in contrast to the industrial interior.

The cosy ambience is further accomplished by an eclectic mix of fabrics and furnishings, warm coloured velvets and dark leather upholstered stools and vintage leather chesterfields complete the cosy seating area opposite the bar, whilst a display of whiskey decanter glass lights are suspended above. A soft glow lights up the display shelves of whiskey and spirits bottles behind the wooden bar, whilst a trio of industrial copper pendants hang low overhead. Candelabras, vintage style glass vases with pretty flowers and an old piano finish off the intimate atmosphere.

With an altogether cosy chilled out vibe and the addition of weekly live acoustic bands this place is ideal for a lazy evening of food and drink after work.
