Cool and Calm Interior Inspiration at Giraffe, Leeds
For this weeks City Guide Interior Inspiration we looked at the super family friendly cool and calm interior of Giraffe Restaurant. Giraffe is a well known restaurant chain specialising in global dishes. In addition it is set against a backdrop of music from around the world. The first restaurant opened in Hampstead in 1998. The name derives from the native African mammal. A beautiful species. Further more they are known to have the largest heart out of all the land mammals. A notion that is greatly reflected in this establishment chain. Developers have put their heart and soul into the look and feel of each of their 55 restaurants. Thus creating a family friendly eatery.
Three of Giraffe Restaurants can be found in the UK’s main airports. Heathrow, Manchester and Glasgow. As well as two at Dubai’s International Terminal. But for this week’s city guide we’re focusing on the Leeds, Trinity branch. Opening in March 2013 the establishment is situated on the top floor of the newly developed Trinity Shopping Complex in the centre of Leeds.
There’s a slight safari theme going on at first glance. Lots of earthy wood features, foliage and plants make up the al fresco dining area. Further more a vibrant orange neon sign hangs above the entrance. A collection of organic cardboard pendants cluster above a comfy seating area as you wait to be taken inside. The large glass windows to the right open out onto the alfresco area. Consequently creating a more spacious look for the establishment.
Once inside a more cool and calm atmosphere unfolds, light wood flooring mingles with white washed wood panels behind the bar area whilst a low white ceiling gives a more spacious feeling. Seating consists of a mixture of mid-century modern green and grey fabric chairs together with warm tan leather booth seats. A collection of light wood table and chairs make up the rest of the dining area which gives a light and airy feeling throughout. The mixture of subtle and light tones and finishes flows calmly through the restaurant creating a tranquil atmosphere away from the hustle and bustle of the shopping centre.
The lighting is very organic and natural, more cardboard pendants are clustered together at each end of the restaurant whilst two oversized wicker style cylindrical pendants create a partition in between. A smaller version of the same pendants can be found hanging over the open kitchen area behind a plant filled glass cabinet. Stage inspired tracked spotlights litter the ceiling giving extra light and ambience.
The main interior palette consists of cool and calm colours such greys, whites. Also light woods and hints of blue and green. It’s a very tranquil mix of colours. Plus the large glass front gives in a lot of light adding to the spacious feeling. For a pop of vibrancy there are two wall features displayed at either end of the restaurant featuring coloured chopped tree trunks. This seems to be a reference to the colours you’d see in some exotic continent such as Africa.
How to recreate Giraffe’s Cool and Calm Interior look
To recreate this cool and calming interior we advise you stick to a serene palette of light woods, greys and whites. For contrast and a warmer more autumn tone you could introduce tan leather seating and brown rattan ceiling fittings. Go all out with natural materials such as rattan, wicker and bamboo for the organic look. We have a great selection of natural pendants from our simple Milton Wicker Woven Cylinder Easy to Fit Shade to our Honey 1 Light Wicker Wave Ceiling Pendant – Brown. If you want to add a pop of colour go for a quirky wall feature and choose exotic colours.
