Benefits of Energy Saving Light Bulbs : Carbon Dioxide emissions are a major issue for climate change and global warming. Furthermore, the use of energy in our home is responsible for 27% of these emissions. More recently cavity wall insulation schemes around the country have lowered the use of heat energy. However, the use of electrical energy from lighting is still a big issue. With some simple steps you can easily reduce the amount of electrical energy used. More so, this benefits you when saving money and helping the environment in the long run.

LED Energy Saving Light Bulbs

There are several ways to light your home more efficiently. Firstly, using energy efficient bulbs or LED bulbs for all lighting fixtures. Also, you should try to direct your light source specifically where it is needed. For instance, recessed adjustable spotlights, angled task lamps and swing armed lights are great at providing directional light. Make the most out of natural daylight by opening curtains. Furthermore, using reflective room surfaces, light coloured walls and mirrors. Lastly, you should be promoting user behaviour within your family by trying not to leave lights once you've left a room. Also, opt for dimmer lighting fixtures and dim during the evening. There is also the option of solar powered lighting.

LED's v CFL's

Trying to get your head around low energy bulbs can be tricky, the main two types that will benefit your home are Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL's) and Lamps with Light Emitting Diodes (LED's). Here's a little bit about these little gems :

Energy Saving Light Bulbs use a lower wattage than ordinary bulbs so are cheaper to run as they use less watts (e.g. energy savings use 11w instead of the standard 60w) the lower wattage also prolongs the life of them making them more cost effective. The standard energy saving bulb converts only 30% of this energy /watts into light and wastes 70% of it through heat (anything that uses energy gets warm, even humans when exercising we warm up and get hot).

Energy Saving Light Bulbs - Diodes

LED's use slightly less watts then an energy saving standard bulb and can use from 2w to 7w, LED's are slightly better than energy saving bulbs because of its efficiency to covert the watts into light. An LED bulb converts 80% of the watt given into light and only wastes 20% through heat. LED's use Light Emitting Diodes (hence their name) to give off the light as opposed to the standard coil in a normal bulb, diodes are a lot more resistant to heat and prolonged use, so can last a lot longer, LED's have a life span of around 20 years.

The coil used in an Energy Saving Light Bulbs are good but has a much less life span as the heat quickly deteriorates the interior of the bulb. The cost for these bulbs is slightly lower than a LED due to it's lifespan.
