Inspiring lighting designs by Marcel Wanders

Inspiring lighting designs by Marcel Wanders

Design inspiration can come from a number of places. Magazines, TV or even general home-ware retailers’ collections. These days it’s social media that plays a big part in design inspiration, particularly, platforms such as Pinterest and Instagram. A whole world of interior designs right at your fingertips. Another great source of design inspiration can come from actual product and interior designer’s works.

Designers, whether in the interior or fashion industry are at the forefront of trends and themes that then trickle down to departments stores and into the general public’s homes. Some designers work can be considered quite high end and more suitable for extravagant homes and premium establishments. But that doesn’t mean you can’t adapt that particular design into your home. High street department stores help with this by introducing designer influenced products for more general market audiences. Today we’ll look at Marcel Wanders’ designs and how you can introduce the same style and look into your own home.

Marcel Wanders is a Dutch Designer from the renowned Powerhouse Studio in Amsterdam. His fame was implemented when he introduced his knotted chair design in 1996 after opening his own design studio a year earlier and he hasn’t slowed down since. Some of his most famous projects include designing the interiors for hotels and even a collection of tableware for KLM Airlines. Some of Marcel Wanders’ most notable design features include:

  • knotted chair;
  • monster chair;
  • sky garden S1 collection;
  • crochet chubby chair;
  • zeppelin collection.

Today we’re going to look at his amazing lighting designs skills. Marcel Wanders has an eye for the unusual, a quirky yet prestige style. He has quoted his mission as “to create an environment of love, live with passion and make our most exciting dreams come true.” There’s no doubting he’s certainly created this notion. His lighting designs are beautiful as well as unique. His ceiling light designs in particular capture and create and whimsical essence. His designs focus on romance, surrealism, poetic features and fantasy.

Marcel Wanders, Sky Garden Ceiling collection, 2007

Traditionalism mingles with contemporary design in this stunning collection introduced in 2007. On first glance the light appears just like any other ordinary domed pendant. A dome shaped shade in a glossy or matt finish. However, on closer inspection, look up into the dome and a traditional design of a plaster effect floral display moulded into the inside of the shade fitting is revealed. This truly is a magical piece that will fit perfectly in any home whether a traditional or contemporary setting. Wanders took inspiration from a previous home he lived in that had traditional moulded ceilings.

Another romance inducing fitting is Wanders Flos Can Can ceiling pendant. Again, Wanders introduces a seemingly simple bell drum pendant design that houses a striking diffuser display which is revealed when lit. The swirled detail diffuser is available in Transparent, Amber and striking Violet shade. More on the contemporary side this fitting would look great taking centre stage over an ultra modern dining table or breakfast bar.

Litecraft Mosaic Lined Ceiling Light

Litecraft’s Mosaic lined ceiling pendant showcases a similar bell drum design with a striking inner gem that gives this pendant some va-va-voom when lit. It does exactly what it says on the tin, a stunning mosaic lined drum shade that sparkles and bounces light around the room.

Wander’s premium designs can be seen in some of the most luxurious hotels and establishments. However, if a Marcel Wanders lamp isn’t quite in-keeping with your budget, we’ve pulled together some budget-friendly lighting designs from our range to help you create a designer interior without the designer price tag.
