Introducing British Interior Designer Kelly Hoppen. Hoppen’s signature ‘look’ is that of a neutral palette consisting of taupe and beige tones. Her interiors focus on clean lines with a hint of opulence. Hoppen, originally born in South Africa moved to London at the age of two with her family. It wasn’t until at the age of 16 that her design flare began to shine when she was given free reign to design a family friends kitchen.
Queen of Taupe – Kelly Hoppen
Kelly Hoppen’s work has continued to grow and grow throughout the last two decades. She was awarded an MBE in 2009 for her services to Interior Design. Hoppen has designed for many high profile clients including Madonna and Elton John. Whilst also using her design ethos to collaborate with many luxury hotel, bar and restaurant brands. She also has a number of successful interior design books released with her most recent one launched in November 2013. And in 2014 launched an online store where her own designs for accessories and soft furnishings are available to buy. Together with some interior design guides as well as continuing her role as a ‘Dragon’ on the TV show Dragon’s Den.
“Taupe is calm, quiet and very easy to live with, it is not overbearing and it does not shout out and demand attention.”
Kelly Hoppen’s Signature Style
Taking Hoppen’s stylist aim, create a calm and relaxing interior with the use of a neutral palette. Layering of textures with an East meets West element thrown in. Her work is very symmetrical and has a definite order to it. However, there is a dramatic edge to Hoppen’s work with the introduction of black and harsh lines through the use of industrial elements. Which contrasts well with the calmer neutral tones and creates layering and definition. The use of taupe, beige and other neutral tones allows for a timeless style that can be enjoyed for many years. It’s so easy to incorporate Hoppen’s look into your own home, choose laid back and calming tones such a beige, creams and fresh white together with an industrial twist.
When it comes to lighting, Hoppen is all about large statement pieces that take centre stage in a room. For instance, she uses a lot of large pendants over kitchen islands and dining tables, ceiling bars that feature three or four pendants are also used a lot in her designs. This style of fitting works best over a table or island as they give an even expanse of light over a larger space. Using this style of light over a particular section of a room will create individual areas thus giving the illusion of more space. Drum shades and pendants that feature large lamp heads are also a classic Hoppen look. Over-sized fittings such as giant bulb lights will also work well in a Kelly Hoppen inspired interior. It’s all about balancing elegance with modern together and taking hints of striking industrialism.
