If you’re a fan of the mid-century modern look and want to incorporate the style of Orla Kiely into your home you’ll need to have a brave taste in colour, bold prints and a love of the 60’s vibe. This look isn’t for the faint hearted so be prepared for full on pattern in eclectic colours. However, if you’re just after a hint of Orla Kiely there is an easier way to incorporate the style into your home, just choose a print that you like and compliment it with more subtle accents. With more of us setting up our own businesses on the side and with GCSE’s and dissertation headlines just around the corner, what better room to spruce up than your home office and work stations. Opt for an Orla Kiely inspired work area full of calming tones and geometric patterns.
For home offices, it’s best to choose an accent wall, ideally the wall in which your desk will be against, choosing other walls may become a distraction. Your accent wall should then house everything you need for that all important study time, such as shelving, lighting, notice boards, stationary and storage. Keeping everything at reaching distance will make for a less stressful and easy study time, try to keep spaces as de-cluttered as possible. Orla Kiely has a stunning range of wallpaper prints, all in her signature mid-century modern style. Choose your favourite print and pick out the colours you love most, we’ve picked out three Orla Kiely prints…
For fans of a milder palette Kiely’s Acorn print in sea blue is ideal, the print features a subtle off white acorn motif with a simple poppy red dot on a sheet of calming sea blue, this is one of Orla Kiely’s more subtle designs and will work well with complimenting pastel blues and greys. We’ve chosen our Mimis Tiered Drum Shade for this look, featuring a double shade in a pastel blue tone the light becomes diffused to create a subtle ambience. Keep colours neutral by teaming with grey or matt chrome finished accessories, our New Task Floor Lamp in Grey will give a wide expanse of light whilst remaining subtle, for contrast add dark furniture.
Our second look incorporates Kiely’s most popular print the “Stem”, featuring Sea green notes together with a mustard and brown palette the print will create a calming vibe in any room. We’ve opted to pick out the mustard and green tones in this print and teamed it with our mustard yellow Benny Table Lamp and Andre Enamelled Pendant, featuring an off white enamelled finish the Andre Pendant also has a subtle yellow tone inside the metal shade with a matching pastel yellow cord. Team with Leafy motifs to reinforce Kiely’s print and opt for brown leather furniture that will tie in with the natural brown tones of the Stem design.
Lastly we looked at Orla Kiely’s Striped Petal Print, this design features a more 60’s feel than her other work, striking orange spots sit against a foggy grey striped backdrop whilst the petal motif adds a natural element. Compliment the orange tones in this print with our Peel Ceiling Light , featuring a simple chrome spiral fitting with funky orange glass shades this light offers a wide expanse of light which can be directed onto specific areas benefiting your study time. Or for a more geometric feel our Spiro Ceiling Pendant is ideal, taking inspiration from the 60’s geometric drawing toy the fitting features a hypotrochoid frame constructed from transparent acrylic. Every office should include some form of table or desk lamp, you should always have a well lit desk for extra concentration when studying and to reduce eye strain, in this case we chose our New Task Lamp in Grey to compliment the Fog grey of the wallpaper print.
